What is MOQ — and why does it exist?
MOQ stands for Minimum Order Quantity — the smallest number of pieces a manufacturer will produce for a single custom design. It exists because custom production has fixed setup costs: print screens, sampling, machine setup and material sourcing. Below a certain quantity, the per-bag cost becomes uneconomical for both sides.
Typical MOQ for jute & cotton bags
For custom export bags, the standard MOQ is usually 500 pieces per design. Some manufacturers go lower for simple items or stock styles; highly customised bags (special sizes, multi-colour print, premium handles) may carry a higher minimum.
Key point: MOQ is almost always per design and per specification. Two colours of the same bag, or two print designs, are usually counted as two separate MOQs.
The MOQ-vs-price trade-off
MOQ and price are linked. Because setup costs are spread across the run, ordering closer to or above the MOQ lowers your per-unit price. Ordering exactly at the minimum is fine for a first run — just expect the best pricing to appear at higher tiers. Our pricing guide shows how quantity affects cost.
Can you order below MOQ?
Sometimes, with trade-offs:
- Stock / unprinted bags — often available in smaller quantities
- Sample orders — a few pieces to test quality before committing
- Higher unit price — some makers accept small runs at a premium
MOQ by product type
Simpler products (plain totes, small pouches) tend to have friendlier minimums than complex ones (laminated bags, structured bags with boards and zips). If MOQ is a barrier, simplifying the spec for your first order can help.
Smart ways to handle your first order
- Start with one or two strong designs rather than many
- Order a sample first to lock quality
- Keep the first run near MOQ, then scale once it sells
- Ask about combining colours to reach better pricing tiers

Frequently asked questions
Is 500 pcs really the minimum? It's the common standard for custom export bags; ask your manufacturer about lower options for stock or simple items.
Does each colour count separately? Usually yes — MOQ applies per design/spec, including per fabric colour.
Can I mix sizes within one MOQ? Generally each size is a separate spec, but ask — some makers are flexible on a first order.
